Breaking the Cycle: Recognizing Bias and Creating Equitable Car

Over the past century, racial ideologies in the United States have shifted in ways that still shape our everyday lives—especially in healthcare. Society has moved from biological racism, which claimed that racial differences were rooted in biology, to cultural racism, which blamed disparities on supposed cultural traits, and finally to color-blind racism, which claims to “ignore” race but often denies systemic inequities entirely.

These shifts are not abstract—they affect real people every day. I’ve experienced this personally. When I’ve called clinics or spoken with office staff as part of my work with Bridge Care Connection, I’ve felt the subtle weight of assumptions. Staff sometimes spoke about me rather than to me, assuming I didn’t understand my care options, billing, or my rights under HIPAA. Even when I knew my information, I could sense that the default assumption was that I wouldn’t, couldn’t, or shouldn’t. That intimidation, that quiet bias, is something countless patients of color face—and often silently accept because the system has taught them to.

It’s experiences like these that inspired Bridge Care Connection to act. We are creating self-bias tests for healthcare providers, helping them recognize unconscious assumptions that may shape patient care. At the same time, we are empowering clients with tools to recognize when they are not receiving care to equal standards—whether that looks like rushed appointments, overlooked symptoms, or dismissive communication. By making bias visible, we provide everyone the tools to advocate for fair and equitable care.

Equity is not just a principle—it is a measurable, actionable goal. Every donor contribution helps us fund these initiatives, whether it’s training for providers, workshops for community members, or creating resources that give patients confidence in navigating their care. Your support directly impacts lives, ensuring that patients in Denver and beyond are seen, heard, and treated with dignity.

Healthcare should never feel intimidating, inaccessible, or unequal. At Bridge Care Connection, we believe in a future where every patient—regardless of race, language, or income—receives care that meets the same high standards of safety, respect, and compassion. And with your help, we can make that future a reality.

Join us in bridging the gap. Advocate, donate, or volunteer. Together, we can ensure equitable care for everyone.
